Many things emerge within a person’s mind and body, or in their external environment, that could cause them to think about suicide. While many people may experience such thoughts at some point in their lives, it doesn’t necessarily mean they wish to follow through with them.

According to Joseph Goldberg, M.D., one of the most common risk factors for having suicidal thoughts is a previous exposure to suicide. It may have been a successful suicide or an attempt by someone known personally by the person currently at risk, or even a prior attempt by the person himself/herself. Those who have attempted suicide or witnessed it firsthand are significantly more likely to make such an attempt in the future.
Other traumatic experiences such as violent, sexual or emotional abuse are also significant risk factors, regardless of whether the abuse is ongoing, recent or in the distant past.
Feelings of isolation caused by a lack of social support are also a major risk factor that can explain why a person may begin to consider suicide. This can come in many forms. It may be isolation caused by a breakdown of personal relationships. It may also be that the person has relationships that are non-supportive and damaging to their wellbeing. One can also feel isolated due to intolerance relating to specific aspects of their identity, such as sexuality.
On the other hand, suicidal thoughts can result when a person does have people who care and show a desire to help, but rejects their help. This could be due to a lack of trust, disbelief in their ability to help or a desire to not be a burden.
According to Mayo Clinic, one major factor that could cause people to have suicidal thoughts is their inability to cope with stressful events. It is not usually the events alone that increase a person’s suicide risk, however. Experiencing a tough breakup or divorce, or job loss, would be tough on anybody. But most people in such situations do not attempt suicide. It is more specifically the lack of strength to get through these events that can be damaging.
This is especially important when the person engages in any sort of substance abuse to deal with their feelings.
Feeling that daily life does not carry any meaning, or that its meaning has faded away, is a serious factor as well. This can occur when a person does not gain any feeling of reward or recognition for their work. The person could also feel an inability to form or maintain successful relationships whether romantic or platonic.
Although these feelings are often associated with critical issues related to mental health, the fact is that even generally healthy people feeling a great deal of stress may be vulnerable. This is crucial to recognize, in order to maximize the odds that such people will seek the support they need from family, friends or medical professionals.
